The Movie:

Gossip” got a tiny release late last Summer, and was seemingly gone before it opened, which is unfortunate. Although it’s certainly not high art, “Gossip” is more entertaining and stylish than the majority of the teen films that I’ve seen in recent months. Much of this is due to the supremely beautiful look that cinematographer Andrrzej Bartkowiak (also director of the recent “Romeo Must Die”) gives the film. Although the producer credit given to “Batman and Robin” director Joel Schumacher may scare some, he doesn’t seem to have had much of an effect on the final product.

The story revolves around “words - how bad could they be?”. As we find out, a number of words get a lot of people in a lot of trouble in “Gossip“, a teen thriller that stars James Marsden(”X-Men”) as Derrick, a student who witnesses a couple - Beau(Joshua Jackson) and Naomi(”Almost Famous”‘ Kate Hudson) together - she’s drunk and rumors begin about what happened - whether it did or didn’t. Suddenly, lives are ruined and the police become involved. Things begin to spiral out of control, but the pieces of the puzzle still don’t quite lock into place.

Performances are better than average, due to the fact that the film was able to attract a solid cast in comparison to many of the teen films today. Marsen is a promising actor, as shown in “X-Men” and here. Hudson is fine, although she doesn’t exactly get to show the kind of talent she did in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous”. Marisa Coughlan (who you may remember from “Teaching Mrs. Tingle”) also gives a good supporting performance. Again though, it’s the cinematography that takes the film to another level, almost becoming a character on its own.

Gossip” isn’t great, but it’s suprisingly solid at times and is paced very well, moving very quickly through its 90 minute running time. It even provides a few interesting, although minor twists along the way.

The DVD

VIDEO: Warner does a marvelous job on this presentation, which reminds me of the cinematographer’s directorial debut “Romeo Must Die”, which often used a similar style of high-impact colors, rich lighting and other touches. Sharpness is impressive - never is the picture the slightest bit soft or edgy. The smooth, natural look is remarkable, offering excellent detail and clarity.

There are a few trace artifacts apparent on this presentation; they are hardly noticable and certainly not distracting. I didn’t notice any print flaws in the presentation; no marks, no scratches, etc. No pixelation, either. All that I saw was a trace of shimmer once or twice. Black level is strong and flesh tones are accurate and natural.

As I mentioned before, colors are extremely bold and well-saturated, but still looking sharp and with no problems at all. The cinematography of the film is stunning, and the presentation here from Warner Brothers is excellent.

SOUND: The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack does a phenomenal job on the music, but doesn’t really offer a whole lot else besides that. The party scene at the club in chapter 4 is a good example of this, with music pouring out from all sides. The music sounds extremely dynamic and powerful, reminding me a bit at times of how good the sometimes similar music sounded in “Go”. Brian Williams(”Strange Days”) was the credited music sound designer, and he did a very good job.

Otherwise, the surrounds do come into play for some low-level, subtle sounds at times that are pleasing and add to the movie. Dialogue sounds clear and easily understood at all times. This isn’t a stunning audio presentation, but it does succeed well in a couple of areas.

MENUS:: The menus here are fairly basic, and simply involve basic film-themed images. No animation.

EXTRAS:

Commentary: This is a commentary from director Davis Guggenheim and star James Marsden. It’s a pretty entertaining commentary, although there are times when the two look a little too “deeply” into the a movie that really isn’t all that deep in the first place. The rest of the discussion is pretty much a fun time for the two as they remember stories from the set and how the movie came together in the first place. There’s a few more areas of silence than I’d like during the track, but overall it’s a moderately enjoyable listen.

Deleted Scenes: First we get three scenes that, according to a text screen that begins it off, were taken out to quicken the pacing of the movie. Next, we see an edited scene of the movie, which shows what the editor had to work with for that sequence. Then, we get a deleted scene that was taken out for character/story reasons. Also included on its own is a slightly different alternate ending that is somewhat interesting.

Music Videos: Poe’s “Our Lips are Sealed” and Tonic’s “Mean To Me”

Travis’
Gossip Interviews: Additional interview footage about the “rumor” in the film.

Trailer: A pretty good theatrical trailer in Dolby 2.0(2.35:1)

Final Thoughts: Warner definitely does deserve praise for the package they’ve put together for “Gossip“. The DVD offers strong audio/video quality and extras for only $19.99 retail price - that means some stores may offer the disc for as low as $13.99. The movie may not be for everyone, but its intended audience of late teens/early 20’s may enjoy it as a rental - and at $13.99, it may get further consideration from those who enjoy it.
