You Gotta Stay Happy (1948)

November 5, 1948

Popular Trio in a Light Movie

T. M. P.
Published: November 5, 1948

Since it was rigged for laughs and serves the purpose of its creation most satisfactorily, let’s not start looking about for quibbling exceptions in the case of “You Gotta Stay Happy.” Let’s just say, and be done with it, that the new picture which arrived yesterday at the Music Hall is rather thin in spots. And now let’s hurry on to report that the over-all effect of this topsy-turvy comedy romance is a feeling of enjoyment that sends one out of the theatre freed —momentarily, at least—of workaday cares. Who could, or should, ask for anything more?

Mind now, the kind of laughter that “You Gotta Stay Happy” provokes won’t cause one’s sides to ache. But the occasions for chuckling are plentiful and, besides, there is a nice, light, airy quality about the production. The component parts all fall together smoothly, thanks to the expert guidance of H. C. Potter, the director. Chances are that in lesser hands the script provided by Karl Tunberg, pleasant and racy though it is, wouldn’t have come off quite as effectively as it does. Anyway, since Mr. Tunberg also is credited as the picture’s producer, he is entitled to a second bow for having picked the right man to translate his story into pictorial terms.

Of course, Joan Fontaine, James Stewart and Eddie Albert should not be overlooked either. For they have the personality and professional know-how to keep this account of an indecisive heiress running away from her newly acquired groom bubbling along. The character name of Dee Dee Dillwood should give the tipoff to the type of idle rich girl Miss Fontaine impersonates. Dee Dee is about to start life with a stuffy lawyer-husband when she has a change of mind and hides out for the night in the adjoining hotel suite occupied by Marvin (Stewart) Payne, an ex-Army pilot operating a struggling air freight line with Bullets (Albert) Baker and other former warbirds. To make a long, and needless to say very much involved, story short Dee Dee worms her way into Payne’s heart and business after he reluctantly agrees to give her a ride to California.

Much happens on the ride and most of it is quite amusing. Miss Fontaine is so charming one almost overlooks the fact that she is quite expert at light comedy. James Stewart, to our mind, shows up much better in “You Gotta Stay Happy” than in any of his previous post-war efforts, and, in fact, the same can be said of Eddie Albert. Perhaps, it’s because the boys happened into the right roles, playing characters that are breezy and adventurous but basically solid citizens nonetheless. Several lesser parts are played in just the right spirit by Roland Young, Willard Parker, as the groom who gets ditched, and Percy Kilbride, who has some rich moments to get over his dry, tangy humor as an Oklahoma farmer.

“You Gotta Stay Happy” is a sure bet to make most people feel just that way.
