How To Love Your Life Again
“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened for us.”
- Alexander Graham Bell
You remember it. I’m sure you do. I am certain that the average person spends much of their time wishing they were back there, laying back, looking up at the stars and dreaming about what they will be and then wishing they were older so that they could be living their dreams… or is it just me? And then the adventure ended, and it was time to go back to work; it was nothing like I had imagined. I’m thinking, “How can I achieve my dreams and change the world when I have these sales to make, these people to see, these problems to conquer and this paper work to do?” Oh the visions of what could have been!
Are you how, while in your youth, you imagined you would be? Have you achieved that which you said that you would that long ago starry night when, if it had not been for gravity, you would have been up amongst the stars? Remember how brilliantly the stars shone, and how they encouraged you to just dream of what could be? You, laying on your back, dancing with the stars, voicing your dreams to the universe, not competing, not doubting, not afraid. In those dreams, you never imagined that you would someday be looking back saying, “I wish I had.” You always saw the biggest, the best, the brightest, and the boldest you that was possible. You were never concerned that what you wanted would not happen, no sir, not you! You were going to go out and shake the universe until the stars of success fell abundantly all around you. It had to happen. Remember that feeling?
When I allow myself to remember what I pictured way back when, it does not include things like having a domineering boss, being surrounded by negative people whose definition of success reads “getting through the day without someone shouting at them or losing their temper with them”. It doesn’t have stress, or pressures or rude people, and it certainly doesn’t have failure. What it does have is happiness, hope, love, success, relationships and fun…Lots of fun. My dreams allowed me to think that I could and that I would change the world, and that I possessed all I needed to make it happen. Yours did too didn’t it?
So, what happened? Are you living up to your potential, or are you potentially living? You know that it is possible; you just haven’t gotten to there yet. One of the best things that you can do for yourself right here and right now, to become that person that you remember, is to rediscover who you actually were when you were younger and allow yourself to dream the big dreams again. Give yourself permission to actually believe that anything is possible, no matter what your current conditions may be. When you find this, you become a better salesperson or scientist, journalist or educator, parent or coach, business person or bouncer, ad writer or artist, and somewhere along the way you learn to love yourself and your life again, and the seeds of greatness that you planted in the spring of your life begin to break through the fertile soil of your emotions and shoot their message up towards those stars.
But it is all up to you, no-one else. Only you can create belief. I can tell you what to believe, you can turn on your television and watch a Discovery Channel documentary on how or what to believe, or you can listen to a smooth and slick sales pitch on who to believe, but, believe me, ultimately you are the one who gets to make that choice.
Do you want to know the secret of loving your life again? I could tell you what it is right now and when I did, you’d have one of two reactions: First, you might say, “It’s so simple, what am I waiting for, I must do this right now!”, or you may possibly say “It can’t be that simple. I was looking for a real secret, not something that I already knew!” The secret is quite simply this: stop putting limitations on yourself based on what you have, think or have done and live in the present moment. Yes, that’s it. But let me explain what I mean.
Who you were yesterday, is NOT the person you are today. You have 24 more hours of experience than you did then, and you have become wiser. What you do with this wisdom and time is the real secret to loving your life. If you believed at one time that you could amount to success, what did you allow into your life to tarnish this picture? Stress…Other people’s opinions…failure…divorce…a failed business? You may have tried something and it didn’t work out the way that you wanted it to, and ok, you had a temporary setback. Does this make it final? Heck no! The way I see it, failure is just one way that you now know how NOT to do something. Give it another try. If you wanted to be an archeologist when you were young, and failed a test, instead of giving up, study and take the test again. What’s the worst thing that can happen? You may learn another way how not to do it, but don’t quit; study and take the test again. There are thousands of people worldwide who are discovering their passions again and going back to school, or starting businesses, or getting married or doing whatever it was that they danced in the stars with when they were young. The key is they are daring to believe that they are more than their current circumstances and you can too!
What dream has kept you leaning against the wall, listening to the music, wanting to dance, but not joining in? There is only one way to dance, and that is to start moving. It doesn’t matter that you have two left feet, or no feet, what matters is that you dance, because by dancing, you learn to let go and learn to love the music which allows you to love your life.
Will you dance the success dance with me my friend? Join me on my journey.
