Pixar?s A Bug?s Life and this year?s Over The Hedge have put a smiling face on the nuisances that have plagued garbage bags and happy homes. And what of ants? Long the irritant of Phase IV, Joan Collins films and the fearsome torture of Solarbabies, these tiny swarms have become a kid film star. One was an ally in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. The overlooked Antz featured the neuroses of Woody Allen, the bravado of Sly Stallone and the gravitas of Gene Hackman. Now, The Ant Bully combines the destruction of male adolescence with an overtly simple message into one of the most pleasant animated experiences of the year. The food chain of the animal kingdom we all live in is pretty uncomplicated. The bigger one smacks down the smaller one. Such is the case for young Lucas Nickle (voiced by Zach Tyler), the frequent target of the neighborhood bully and his loyal Grover Dills. After taking his daily wedgie and a family life which makes him feel like a baby, Lucas takes his frustrations out on the ant colony that exists in his lawn. First with his water gun and later by hose which draws the admiration of a pushy exterminator (Paul Giamatti) who gets Lucas? consent to spray the area while his folks are out of town.Down below another plan is being hatched by Zoc (Nicolas Cage), the colony?s resident wizard, who is working on a potion that will shrink their tormentor down to their size. When Lucas gets an earful of it as he sleeps, the ants whisk him underground and vow to make him work his way towards understanding they are living beings too. Or eat him. Zoc?s gal, Hova (Julia Roberts) offers her leadership in this venture and along with teacher Kreela (Regina King) and vain muscle ant, Fugax (Bruce Campbell), Lucas slowly discovers that the strength of the many outweighs a solo performance. The Ant Bully achieves many surprising pleasures during its run, starting right off with its splendid animation which is bursting with a crispness of imagery that puts most of the stylings this year to shame. John A. Davis (also taking writing duties adapting a less-than-well received children?s book by John Nickle) comes from the Jimmy Neutron TV series (and movie) and his animation team brings depth to the colony interior and its thousands of inhabitants. Then they really get to shine in the action scenes which are surprisingly copious and well-staged including stand-offs with invading wasps and the overzealous bug-smoker that take on the fury of old WWII dogfight movies.Davis, who also made the highly entertaining IMAX short Santa vs. the Snowman, keeps the pace brisk so as not to bore adults inundated with recent animated disappointments. It?s quite funny, bringing myself to virtual scream laughter at two moments in the belly of a frog and, surprisingly, in the aftermath of a bodily function. It?s message of working together to achieve a common goal is a two-headed beast (one respected colleague of mine has already labeled it as communism); a group effort always appreciated but it does sidestep the benefit of solving one?s own problems. Plus, as valiant as they may seem in the film, our feet are going to have many future encounters with these sweet rock hoarders and we?ll never think twice. The voicework by Cage, Roberts & Giamatti rises above the usual celebrity-driven blandness (and isn?t it always nice to hear Bruce Campbell even if you can?t see him in the flesh.) I had a great time with The Ant Bully and even though we have five months left in the year, it would easily fit on my animated feature ballot alongside Monster House and A Scanner Darkly and would need something pretty special to knock it off.
video download
Ant Bully, The dvd download
Ant Bully, The full movies online
download Ant Bully, The avi movies
watch Ant Bully, The movies com
watch divx movie
divx full Ant Bully, The movie download

At the very least, it’s his best video game adaptation. Again, like Alone in the Dark was a vast improvement over House of the Dead, it says a lot, but still doesn’t mean all that much. Maybe I should say this, it’s his most competent film to date. It looks like an actual movie. Not a direct to video movie, a real movie. It has some fairly decent production values, and doesn’t look like it was shot or edited by a 10 year old. Mostly. In fact, I’m a little disappointed, because I was looking forward to trashing this thing worse than anything Steven Seagal has produced in the past five years, but this let me down. It’s still pretty bad, don’t get me wrong. The acting is laughable, especially when you consider that everyone is trying for British accents EXCEPT for Michael Madsen, who’s just playing Michael Madsen. (Although, strangely enough, I liked him better in this than in Sin City). The plot is kind of silly, although there’s really only one major plot strand, as opposed to the “We’re bored with this storyline, let’s introduce something new that doesn’t make sense” approach of Alone in the Dark. It’s not that great a story, but it woks, and carries the film. The special effects are decent (no video game footage). Oh, and this movie has one of THE MOST unnecessary and gratuitous sex scenes I have ever seen. Seriously, there’s no budding attraction between the two leads, there’s nothing that can prepare you for it. It’s just this rough sex scene with no place in the movie, just for a chance to see Kristanna Loken’s breasts. They are lovely, believe me, but you feel a little embarrassed for her. It didn’t help that she sat a few rows ahead of me, either. Ummm….the story is odd. It’s the 1700s, I think. Kristanna plays Rayne, a vampire who’s been in the custody of a carnival sideshow. She’s a vampire, and she drinks blood and heals to the audience’s delight. But she’s not just a vampire. She’s a dhampir, a half human, half vampire. Kind of like Blade, but without the being able to walk in sunlight thing. (I tell you, there were times when I wish Blade would show up just to shut everyone’s mouth, and truly kick some ass). Anyway, there’s head vampire guy, named Kagan, played by Academy Award winner, Sir Ben Kingsley. He’s Rayne’s father, and he raped and murdered Rayne’s mother in front of her eyes. (She says this a few times. They show it too, but this lady with an enormous head - seriously, it was like Sputnik- was sitting upright and blocking my view). Anyway, Kagan wants to collect these three parts of the most powerful vampire - the eye, heart, and rib- and become the most powerful vampire. Or something. There’s this group called the Brimstone society, and they’re intent on stopping this. They’re led by Vladamir (Madsen), and he has Sebastian (Matt Davis, who was in Below, which is a movie that rocks, go see it instead) and Katherine (Michelle Rodriguez, more on her later) at his side. Anyway, there’s a lot of fighting, and a lot of boring talky scenes, and the uncomfortable sex scene with Matt Davis and Kristanna Loken, and then a big battle. Because Rayne joins forces with Brimstone, after she acquires the eye, which absorbs into her. Or something. I’m not really all too clear on that.So yeah, it sounds like a recipe for disaster, with all fans waiting for Uwe Boll to stir the pot the only way he can. But he actually manages to get some things right. There’s some good blood stuff in here, that can be kind of amusing. The man needs to learn geography when shooting an action sequence, as well as hiring a better fight choreographer. But the fights aren’t horrible. In fact, there’s nothing horrible about this movie. Actually, there is one thing. Michelle Rodriguez. I’m sorry, I tried defending her for ages. But the fact is, even with a decent turn on Lost this season, the girl always plays the same pissed off character. And it’s not all that good a job she does playing it. On top of that, she struggles with a horrible accent that comes and goes. At least Madsen didn’t bother trying. Like I said, the movie isn’t horrible at all, which should come as a surprise. I never played the game Bloodrayne. but I thought it involved Nazis. Apparently this is a prequel to the storyline of the games, which is actually a smart way to accomplish this. It was an interesting setting for a vampire flick, and the sets look pretty decent, and not at all like a renaissance fair’s back lot. Shooting in Romania probably helped. Uwe Boll didn’t shit the bed like he normally does, and I walked away, well, a little disappointed. Still, I’ve seen pretty worse flicks on cable TV late at night. This film is mediocre. It’s beige. Plain. It’s cotton candy, instantly forgotten after leaving the theater. Actually, the best part of the whole flick was the Dungeon Siege teaser attached at the beginning. I’m not gonna lie to you, I’m curious about this movie. It looks quite decent. At least it looks light years better than Dungeons and Dragons. That movie sucked some groin, huh? It looks pretty decent, and Jason Statham looks really badass. Sure, it looks like a Lord of the Rings rip off, but it could shock us all. NOW, on to the after party. Hanging outside the premiere, I managed to say hi to Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, who was very friendly, but definitely wanting to get far away from me. My friend and I tried to break into the after party by tagging along with Michael Madsen and his crew, but that didn’t happen. So we hung outside the party for quite awhile, drinking and scheming ways to get inside. Lucky for us, everyone left the party, and we got see them all. We spotted Kristanna, who looked like she was going to prom. That girl is VERY tall, but I have to confess, I like her better as a red head, like in the film. I found her quite hot there). Will Sanderson was there. Uwe Boll enthusiasts, such as myself, know that Will is in every Uwe Boll movie. He’s even on the commentary track on House of the Dead, and he dies halfway through the flick. Anyway, he was pretty damn cool. But then came the moment of truth. I actually got to meet the man himself. Dr. Uwe Boll. A moment like this, I couldn’t have prepared for. Let me tell you something, I’ve trashed this man more than most should. Hell, I show House of the Dead to anyone and everyone to show them what is quite possibly the worst film ever made. (Of course, I did BUY a copy of it, but that’s besides the point). Meeting him was something I never would have expected to do. And let me tell you something, he’s actually a pretty nice guy. He certainly knows ABOUT movies. (We share the same opinions on a few things, including the horrible ending of War of the Worlds). And he’s polite, and friendly, and he gives you his full attention when you talk with him. It almost made me feel bad trashing his other films. Almost. The movies still suck balls. And this one really is his best film yet. I’m not saying that because I feel bad. I’m saying it because it’s my honest opinion. I hope he gets his act together and makes an awesome movie, and shuts guys like me up for awhile. Time will tell, I guess. Anyway, that was my evening. Sure it could have been better if I got called away halfway through the movie to have sex with a cute girl, but that didn’t happen. It’s a diversion at best. See at your own risk, but I highly recommend seeing the film while drinking. I rate it about on par with Underworld, which was a film that could have been SO much better. This movie could have been SO much better too, but it is what it is. Oh well. There’s always Dungeon Siege…..

Apparently, the characters still haven't caught up with that "new
fangled invention" of the toothbrush. Or if they had, they definitely
don't brush their teeth more than one or twice a year if even that
much. They make the audience feel very glad indeed that smellovision
isn't included in the experience. I couldn't help but wonder what was
used to create the effect of such truly awful teeth as it was
definitely disgusting.

Good production values for an intentionally brain-dead stupid movie,
but somehow, it didn't quite click for me. All the elements were there,
but they didn't quite gel out correctly. Maybe because everything was
just constantly a little too over the top, even in situations when
subtleness would have worked better.

The movie is a bit of silliness, that almost, almost works. A little
too rough around the edges, though, to make the silliness really work
as it should have.

Worth watching? I dunno… You should realize ahead of time there are
NO socially redeeming features to it and it IS pretty rough around the
edges. Consider carefully the use of "inbred" in the movie title
because that's pretty much what you get.
The Movie:

Betty Thomas has proven herself to be a gifted director of comedy. “The Brady Bunch Movie” had the right material and she provided the right tone and timing. Howard Stern’s movie, “Private Parts”, had heart and fine storytelling. Thomas and star Eddie Murphy even made “Dr. Dolittle” into something more than the material would suggest. Unfortunately, “I Spy“, where Thomas has to handle both action and laughs, hardly delivers any memorable action and only occasionally gets laughs out of what seem more like improvised situations.

The film, based on a TV series which few of this generation probably know of,
stars Owen Wilson as Alex Scott, a spy rising in the ranks of the organization. He’s paired up with civilian Kelly Robinson (Murphy), an ego-driven 58-0 boxer. Robinson’s next fight is in Budapest, which is where the film’s villian (Malcolm McDowell, who’s in all of about two scenes) is about to sell off a stolen jet plane that can turn invisible. McDowell’s character is a boxing fan, so Murphy’s character will provide Wilson’s a perfect opening to take the plane back.

Of course, things don’t go as planned, leading the two to have their cover blown and run in a few rather mediocre chase scenes. Although Thomas is working with a remarkably skilled cinematographer (Oliver Wood, “Bourne Identity” - in fact, if it’s still playing around, definitely go see that film instead of this one), she can’t seem to get the action to not seem primitive (I mean, it’s a spy movie) and second-rate. An action-driven finale is handled in especially awkward fashion, with so many flip-flops and bad twists that the characters voice their confusion on who’s on which side. I would have voiced my confusion, too, but by this point I’d essentially stopped caring.

Thankfully, the comedy works a little better. Murphy and Wilson occasionally seem to be fighting for the jokes, but when they work together well (a scene where they’re waiting out bad guys in a sewer and talking about their pasts), they’re amusing. Famke Janssen, playing Wilson’s co-spy and love interest, has little to do, as does Gary Cole (”Office Space”) as a spy who gets better gadgets than Wilson’s. McDowell is hardly a villian, although to give him credit, there’s hardly much of the character, either.

Still, there’s an overwhelming sense of been here, seen this (and seen it done a whole lot better) about “I Spy“. There’s nothing particularly fresh about its story or presentation; it’s just another buddy-action picture, done with even less inspiration than many that have come before it.

Hey kids! It’s Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Chasing Amy) back where we want him, and where he said he’d never return — the View Askewniverse. After receiving a less-than-stellar reception for the only film that didn’t fit into the wild and wacky world he had created, Jersey Girl, Smith did what all of his fans wanted him to do, crafting a sequel to the film that first put him on the filmmaking map, Clerks.

This second movie opens with the Quik Stop in the midst of burning down, taking the RST Video store next door with it. Without a place to work, two of the clerks of those stores, Dante and Randal, get a job at a fast food restaurant (first featured in Dogma), Mooby’s. Now approaching their mid-30s, some major changes in their lives are finally coming about, as Dante (O’Halloran, Mallrats) is set to get married and move to Florida to start a new life for himself. This doesn’t sit well with his best friend, Randal (Anderson, Now You Know), and even seems to be affecting his friendship with Mooby’s manager, Becky (Dawson, Rent), with whom Dante had a liaison with one night, and despite her assertion that she doesn’t believe in romantic love, she has some feelings that suggest they share more than a friendship. The film takes place on Dante’s final day at Mooby’s, featuring crazy customers, conversations both heartfelt and banal, and, of course, the return of Jay (Mewes, RSVP) and Silent Bob (Smith) as the drug dealers peddling their wares in front of the store.

Although there may be few fans of Clerks that would claim Clerks II a better film, on a technical level, it is. Obviously, many reasons stem from the shooting budget, since the first film was famously shot for about $27,000, while this higher profile sequel cost $5 million to produce. With a higher budget, Smith is also able to get recognizable talent to appear in his film, most notably Rosario Dawson in a prominent role. The amateur actors in the first film are now established comedians with better acting skills and funny ad-libs. Smith is also a more seasoned director and editor, and even manages to put in a few poignant moments of drama within the framework of this otherwise ribald comedy. Yes, it’s a better film in nearly every way, although most fans would still claim the first film funnier. Also, given the limited tools and talent that Smith had to work with at the time, Clerks was definitely a unique, remarkable achievement in independent filmmaking, while Clerks II is just another raunchy comedy.

Unlike many other critics, and certainly most fans, I don’t consider the original Clerks to be a great movie, although I do think it is a very funny one in parts. Try as I might to overlook them, there are just too many wince-inducing moments where either the comedy doesn’t work or the direction and acting show their lack of experience. I can take the film on its own terms, but I won’t disregard my critical instincts just because the film was made on the cheap by a bunch of nobodies.

Clerks II, despite better acting, directing, and production values, still has its share of weaknesses. The writing is definitely still funny, and sometimes hilarious, but not all of it is. Walk-on appearances by Ben Affleck (Man About Town) and Jason Lee (Dreamcatcher) are more of a novelty for Smith fans than they are humorous, while the characterizations are, as in many most of Smith’s films, idealized in their respective character archetypes to the point of artifice. There is also more of a central plot here, and it’s a fairly predictable one, as you know that the flirtations between Dante and Becky are more than passing, and with him about to leave with ball-busting fianc?e Emma (played by "Mrs. Kevin Smith", Jennifer Schwalbach), turns of events will be in play to make him rethink his life-changing decision.

At least the plot, such as it is, is kept out of the way throughout most of the film so that we can get more of what we pay our hard-earned money to see. We like funny characters of very different natures interacting with one another in clever ways. We like dialogue that sparkles whenever discussing beloved geeky pop culture phenomena like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, "The Transformers", and Silence of the Lambs. We like the way Smith constantly pushes the limits of good taste, not afraid to dabble in humor that many people might find shocking, including exploration of racial epithets, depictions of bestiality, and an obsession with graphic sexual dialogue. When Clerks II is funny, it is very funny, and as with the first film, fans will be quoting from the film’s choicest bits for years.

Perhaps the biggest improvement of Clerks II over the original Clerks comes not through the addition of better players in the supporting roles, but in the very impressive acting by the two lead players, Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson. Clerks had been the first movie for both actors, and unfortunately it did show at times, but in Clerks II, they manage to provide a great deal of depth and sincerity in their roles. There are a few scenes of seriousness Smith has written in for these once wafer-thin characters, lamenting their squandered lives and readiness for maturity. These scenes would give even seasoned actors a bit of a challenge, but O’Halloran and Anderson nail them cold, offering a touching and telling dimension to characters we previously considered only vessels for Smith to draw out funny dialogue. Such serious moments would have seemed out of place in the first film, and without the talent in front of and behind the camera, they would have been rejected soundly. In Clerks II, they are readily embraced as even the funniest of scenes, and represent the best the movie has to offer.

As funny as I found much of Clerks II, and of which I recommend to all fans of the first film, I can’t quite go the distance in terms of recommending it without reservations to those not considered true-blue Kevin Smith fans. His direction is still spotty, his humor scattershot, his characterizations not always genuine, and his awkward tendency to throw in background music just to have it do make for an uneven experience for those looking for something more than just a few very funny conversations. As with every other Smith film, to properly appreciate Clerks II to its fullest extent, one has to overlook the inconsistent qualities, both in the level of humor as well as the execution.

I suppose I am somewhat obliged to mention that some of this humor will likely offend the easily offended, especially in scenes where the characters discuss the racist qualities of the term "porch monkey" and a donkey show scene that will cross the boundary of good taste for most (which is precisely why Smith explores it with gusto). As with the first Clerks, Clerks II is the perfect "water cooler" movie, where you go into work (or school) the next day, standing around and telling your coworkers and friends all about it, recounting the funnier and most raunchy moments with nostalgic relish.

The Movie

Run Time: 14 Hours 24 Minutes

For those not familiar with Highlander - The Series, this show is a television adaptation of Hollywood feature film, Highlander. The television series stars Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod. He is an immortal who has been given the gift of eternal life. The series revolves around the life of MacLeod in the 90s, detailing his interactions with friends, enemies, and his past. For the most part, in each episode MacLeod faces another immortal in a battle to the death and it happens because MacLeod is trying to rectify some wrongdoing. While in previous seasons this approach was entertaining, it begins to get a little old in the fifth season. As a result, the fifth season as a whole isn’t extremely entertaining.

The major problem with season five of Highlander is the presentation of the entire season. Each episode provides a new and somewhat “different” story, with very little reference to previous stories. In other words, season five lacks a really any kind of story building. While some television shows like Will & Grace or Law & Order do not require this, the fifth season of Highlander just doesn’t do very well without it. The dramatic appeal of the series requires it. It’s the fundamental aspect that makes you want to see more. The reason that I state that the fifth season of Highlander needed this is because the individual stories in season five are pretty dry. There’s more than one episode that feels a little too much like the last. For instance, there are a few occurrences when MacLeod must choose between a pair of his friends. In these episodes, two friends of MacLeod want each other’s head and MacLeod must determine who’s right and who’s wrong or find a way for them to make peace. Overall the fifth season just doesn’t have a lot of entertaining stories.

One of these exceptions is the very last episode of the season, “Archangel”. Unlike season four, this episode ends with a big cliffhanger. After MacLeod loses his sanity (or at least appears too), one of MacLeod’s closest friends makes his final appearance in the series. It’s a really entertaining episode because it leaves you wanting to see more, to know what happens next. However, it was a pretty dramatic change to the series. I know a lot of fans weren’t happy. If you watch the special feature “The Time of Gathering: Highlander’s 1998 Convention”, you’ll hear all about it. This brings me back to my criticism of this season. The season ended with a very strong episode. While this is great, it poses a problem because the rest of the season just wasn’t that exciting. The intense drama and the desire to know what happens next just didn’t occur. The fact of the matter is that this season isn’t gripping and it’s hard to really enjoy.

On a positive note, this season did very well with character development. While all of the main characters have been defined in previous seasons, some of the episodes in season five did a fairly good job taking these characters to another level. In the two part episode, “Comes a Horseman” and “Revelation 6:8″ there is quite a lot of development for my favorite character, Methos (Peter Wingfield). His past is revealed and it’s filled with hatred, deceit, and outright evil. Furthermore, in episodes like “Forgive Us Our Trespasses” we get a chance to see MacLeod, an overly good guy, realize that maybe he’s not really that good. The question becomes, what of MacLeod’s nature allows him to be a good guy? When he kills, how is it any different than when a “bad” guy kills? In the beginning of the season, “End of Innocence”, MacLeod’s protege Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch) changes from a brash and naive into untrusting and hate-driven punk. In the end, the character Ryan gets a chance to grow a little bit more.

However, despite this positive aspect of the season, it doesn’t make it truly entertaining. The fact of the matter is the fifth season as a whole isn’t very good. On an individual episode-by-episode basis it’s another story. Because of the lack of a long running story that trickles throughout the entire season (or even part of), alone each episode can be fairly entertaining. But most of these episodes are good for one and only one viewing. After you’ve seen it, you probably won’t want to watch it again in the future. Fans should be pretty interested in this DVD release, but casual viewers and newcomers to the series, this season really isn’t Highlander in all of its glory.

The DVD

Video:
The fifth season of Highlander is presented in its original television aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame color. The picture quality seems to vary in each episode. Some portions of are filmed under different lighting with different equipment, which results in a very some non-streamline quality. Overall, it does not feel much better than what you would witness from broadcast or cable television. There is a very distinct grain in the picture and sometimes it is very noticeable. In regards to viewing pleasure, it shouldn’t hinder your experience, but it definitely won’t make it better.

Sound:
While there wasn’t a great improvement with video quality, the sound quality seems to have received a little more attention. In addition to a standard 2.0 Dolby digital stereo audio track, Anchor Bay included a 5.1 Dolby digital stereo audio track. The 2.0 track sounds fairly decent, but a little too flat. The remastered 5.1 track sounds much better. There is a significant improvement, providing rich and vibrant sound. Still both audio tracks are not superb, as they both have a slight overheard. It’s nearly inaudible, but the noise distortion can be recognized at very high volumes.

Extras:
This DVD release has a lot of special features. The majority of special features are on the first six discs and include audio commentaries, video commentaries, and bonus footage: deleted & alternative scenes. Each of the 18 episodes in this release has at least one of the three extras and sometimes, all three. The commentaries include cast & crew: Adrian Paul, Peter Wingfield, Jim Byrnes, Stan kirsch, David Abramowitz, Bill Panzer, Peter Ellis, Don Paonessa, Richard Martin, Anthony Delongis, and Gillian Horvath. These extras are pretty impressive, with more than enough entertainment to keep the fans at bay for hours. The extras don’t stop there, as plenty more is included. Additionally, “The Watcher Chronicles” are supplied for each episode. It contains a breakdown of significant mortals, immortals, places, weapons, and events of each episode.

On Disc 7, there are two alternative cuts of episodes “Comes a Horseman” and “Revelations 6:8″. These two alternative cuts also come equipped with audio commentaries. This is pretty cool, except the picture quality is crap and the sound quality isn’t very good either. Next we have a bloopers reel, which is my favorite extra. It opens with a hilarious song and Jim Byrnes giving a comical monologue. There are also two featurettes: “Duels”, which features various scenes of MacLeod in combat, and “The Romances of Duncan MacLeod”, which shows MacLeod with the numerous women he’s loved.

The extras on Disc 8 include two featurettes. The first featurette is “The Time of Gathering: Highlander’s 1998 Convention”. Believe it or not, it’s exactly what it says. An hour and eight minute documentary covering parts of the convention and brief words from a lot of diehard Highlander fans. I didn’t find this to be very entertaining. There are a few moments that provide some interesting comments and a little humor, but it doesn’t happen a lot. The second featurette is “Peter Wingfield: The Man Who Became Methos”, which is 39 minutes of Wingfield talking about his life leading up to his role in Highlander. Fans of Wingfield will get a kick out of this, but unless you’re really interested in him, this probably won’t be that exciting.

The last set of extras is found on the bonus CD-ROM (Disc 9). It contains scripts for each episode, production notes & drawings, storyboards, cast & crew biographies, and a trivia game.

Final Thoughts:
While I enjoyed watching Highlander - The Series Season Four, season five just wasn’t as exciting. There were too many slow episodes to really enjoy it. On a purely episode-by-episode basis watching an episode here and there can be entertaining. On the other hand, the season as whole doesn’t prove to be truly remarkable. It comes off pretty dry and lacks really strong entertain value. Season five makes for good casual viewing. In other words, it’s a good rental for a rainy day.
Highlander full length movies
download full movies
watch divx movies online
full length Highlander vids
video downloads
download new release Highlander movies
movie download

A good spoof is hard to find now that Mel Brooks has been preoccupied with Broadway. Earlier this year we had the horrific and anger inducing “Date Movie” which, for your sake, I will not take the time to verbally abuse. Now we have the barely sub-par “Scary Movie 4“, directed by David Zucker (Airplane) and starring Anna Faris (Brokeback Mountain), Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man), Leslie Nielsen (Naked Gun) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners). The good news is it’s certainly better than both “Date Movie” and even “Scary Movie 3″, but the bad news is that’s not saying much.

Cindy Campbell (Faris) just doesn’t seem to have any luck avoiding evil beings, ghosts, or serial killers. Despite the fact that she has sometimes not even survived past additions to the Scary Movie series, she always returns for the next film with no explanation why. It’s a spoof. Do they really need a reason? In Scary Movie 4, Cindy moves to a new town and finds a job as a housekeeper. Her next door neighbor is Tom Ryan (Bierko), a dock worker who’s failed marriage and ineptitude as a father keeps him on the lookout for the next Ex-Mrs Ryan. And everything seems to be great except for the creepy japanese ghost that lives in her house and the alien Tri-pods that have come to destroy everything in their path. Sound familiar? Of course it does. It’s a spoof movie.

The Scary Movie series has never been that funny. The first two overloaded on being gross for a laugh (anyone remember the geyser of sperm?) and number 3 left me with a very sour feeling. I find it interesting that, to me, Scary Movie 4 is the best of the bunch. Don’t assume that means I’m recommending it. The film does have some pretty hilarious moments, but they have been sparsely scattered amongst a great deal of flat or unfunny scenes.

The film opens in an obvious parody of “Saw”, but this time it is Shaquille O’Neal and Dr. Phil McGraw who are playing the game. Afterwards it cuts to James Earl Jones reciting Morgan Freeman’s lines from ”War of the Worlds” and we get the first real giggle inducing bit when microscopic organisms jiggle, dance, and flash the camera to the tune of “I Like Big Butts”. Some of the other highlights of the film include: an overdose of viagra; the alien crafts being giant (Tr)I-Pods that switch from “Awesome 80s” to “Destroy Humanity”; a ghost victim being used as an office supply; a Dakota Fanning look-alike being struck by lightning (twice) and also by whatever blunt objects imaginable; and the US president’s obsession with a story about a duck.

What kills the movie is it’s lack of energy. I’ve never understood why Anna Farris is one of the only two original cast members to return for each film in the series, because she has always been the most forgettable with her lack-luster ditzy girl impression. The saving grace comes from Regina Hall as Cindy’s sex obsessed friend Brenda. She adds the much needed energy to each scene she is in, which makes it a pity that she isn’t introduced until the movie is half over. I also thought that Bierko gave a memorable performance as clutzy neighbor Tom Ryan. I’m sure most people will appreciate the scene where he spoofs Tom Cruise’s behavior on Oprah.

Much like most spoofs, every scene seems to be directly taken from the movie it parodies. But it’s when the film breaks the mold and does something unexpected that my interest is peaked. You get a few moments like that from this movie, but usually you’ll be expecting the joke long before you get to it. When Anthony Anderson and friend have a flashback about being two cowboys out in the wilderness…well…you already know where it’s headed. Even the “twist” at the end of the film leaves you feeling cheated.

While “Scary Movie 4” will not be joining the short list of decent spoof films, it will not be known as one of the worst either. I left the theater feeling unsure exactly how I felt about the film because I at least got a few good laughs in. The movie is average as far as spoofs go. I will give it that honor. At the end of the year, when you think back to your favorite comedies you had seen over the course of it, you might not even remember Scary Movie 4 at all. If you decide you must see it, bring along friends and see it in a crowded theater. The contagious quality of cascading laughter through the room may be the only thing that saves this movie for you.

The Movie

Since the publication of the award-winning “Where the Wild Things Are”, Maurice Sendak has been a powerful and popular name in the world of children’s literature. Where Sendak’s works are popular for several reason, part of the allure lies in the fact that his books can be enjoyed on many levels, by both adults and children. (Just look at all of the adults who still love “Where the Wild Things Are”). The Scholastic Video Collection now presents animated versions of some of Sendak’s most beloved stories. This new DVD contains “Where the Wild Things Are”, selections from “The Nutshell Kids”, and “In the Night Kitchen”.

(As this DVD contains several different episodes, each will receive a capsule review which includes an overview of the video and audio aspects as well. It can be assumed that these shorts were captured on film for classroom use. Each contains a stereo soundtrack.)

“Where the Wild Things Are” — 7 minutes — This timeless tale is brought to life with a minimalist style of animation. In this story, a young boy named Max is wearing a wolf-suit and acting like a “wild thing”. When he is sent to his room without his supper, Max imagines that he sails across the sea to an island of “wild things” and becomes their king. But, Max soon learns that being a “wild thing” isn’t always fun. There are many ways to “read” this story, but I like to go for the most obvious take, which is that it’s OK to be wild, as long as you know your boundaries. For this version, Sendak’s original art from the book has been brought to life with subtle animation, so basically we have still pictures that offer touches of movement. While this static approach may seem a bit boring to some, it does nothing to sully this classic. The image is slightly grainy and there are some defects from the source print. The audio is fine.

“The Nutshell Kids” — 14 minutes — This section features four musical number from the film “Really Rosie”, with vocals by Carole King. “Alligators All About” is a simple song that uses the alphabet as its basis. In “Pierre”, we meet a boy whose catch-phrase is “I don’t care”, but he then meets a hungry lion who may change that tune. “One was Johnny” is a short and simple song that teaches counting. And finally, there’s the catchy number “Chicken Soup with Rice”. Each piece here is fully-animated, but the drawings aren’t all that great. The video shows a great deal of grain and many defects from the source print, and “Chicken Soup” is blurry at times. The audio is OK, but there is a slight audible hiss.

In the Night Kitchen — 7 minutes — Whereas “Where the Wild Things Are” is odd in a fun way, “In the Night Kitchen” is just plain weird. A young boy named Mickey is awakened by a noise coming from the kitchen. He then falls through the floor, losing all of his clothing in the process. (I’m not making this up.) He lands in the kitchen, which is being staffed by three giant chefs who look like Oliver Hardy. (Once again, not making this up.) The chefs encase Mickey in cake, and then he flies an airplane into a giant bottle of milk. The animation is taking directly from Sendak’s book, but it looks like something from Ralph Bashki. Parents may want to view this one before showing it to the youngsters, as it may be too strange from some kids to handle. On the technical side, the animation looks great and the video shows only a slight amount of grain. The colors are good. The audio shows no overt defects.

Extras

This DVD contains a handful of extras. First, we have a second presentation of “Where the Wild Things Are”, this one offering the narration in Spanish. Next, we have an 6-minute excerpt from the 1985 film “Sendak”, in which the author discusses the origins of “Where the Wild Things Are” and “In the Night Kitchen”. He is very pointed and frank in his speech and it’s hard to not admire his convictions. (And, I learned that he’s not French!) The final extra is not really an extra at all. A “read-along” is offered, but this is essentially the addition of English subtitles on each of the main selections. The subs are the same size as standards subs. They would need to be bigger to be effective as a “read-along”.

It’s best to go into this DVD knowing that there is no big fully-animated version of “Where the Wild Things Are”. (Although, you have to wonder why no one has done this.) The selections contained on this DVD are short and sweet, and serve as a nice introduction to the world of Maurice Sendak.
full length movie online
watch videos on line
Wild Things internet movie
divx trailers
Wild Things movie downloads
download new release movies
full length downloadable Wild Things movies

Brian De Palma’s (Dressed to Kill, Phantom of the Paradise) updating of Scarface is one of those films that runs the gamut from "all-time favorite" to "worst film I’ve ever seen" among critics and non-critics alike. Some love the ultra-violent nature while others loathe see it as the main detraction. Some like the stylistic touches dolloped on by De Palma, while others feel it jars with the grittiness of the story. Regardless of where you stand, it is still a memorable viewing experience, and while it may not please everyone, it is engaging enough to garner a reaction in anyone who sees it.

Admittedly, the main plot is predictable, and not too complex in structure. Al Pacino (The Godfather Part II, Serpico) plays Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant and one of many criminals sent to the United States in 1980 by Fidel Castro claiming political asylum. He starts off as small time crook and works his way up to big time drug dealer in Miami.

Scarface is most memorable for the incredible performance by Pacino, and as a whole, it’s a well-crafted, if somewhat overlong, morality tale. The sparkling screenplay by Oliver Stone (Conan the Barbarian, The Hand) is full of many memorable lines, while the direction by De Palma is less of the virtuoso style that is his usual custom, but is far from static. Yet, Scarface is a three hour film, and as such, does tend to have its share of lulls, resulting in scenes that are unnecessarily long, and for a film this grisly, some of the events that transpire seem too unbelievable to be taken seriously. Adding to the detraction is an unremarkable synthesized score by Giorgio Moroder (Superman III) , which brings a level of cheese to the production. Despite the film’s substantial flaws, it remains very watchable due to Pacino’s bombastic performance, a smart script, and a director that knows what he’s doing stylistically, even if his editing skills left much to be desired.

Scarface is recommended for fans of Pacino, De Palma, or just gangster films in general. Viewers that are turned off by excessive violence, as well as those that just abhor gangster flicks, are recommended to veer away from this, as there are some scenes even someone as hardened as I am had to look away from (especially a scene involving a chainsaw). It’s a very visceral form of filmmaking, and successful in that mode, though not to everyone’s taste.

Unfortunately, not only is the film a botch (though a semi-entertaining one, I?ll admit), but so are their performances: Bridges, who plays the Boston police department?s top bomb dismantler, is uncommonly unfocused; and Jones, as the bomb-setting villain of the piece, is uncommonly emotive. (They also wield skewered Irish accents, with Bridges? the worst of the two: ?Wule nomba wun wen disawmin? betty ? ya don?t step un ?em.?) Coming in at just over two hours, the film is episodic and lackluster in narrative drive, and it just kind of slogs forth, which no film, especially a thriller, should do. The villain, who?s just broken out of a prison in the opening section, is supposed to be menacing but is so weirdly eccentric he seems to have escaped from a titanically awful off-off-Broadway production instead; and the hero, who is revealed to have been a fellow bomber alongside the villain while in Ireland before his conscience got the better of him, has to juggle domestic responsibility after recently marrying Suzy Amis, and it?s jejune stuff. Stephen Hopkins? direction is acceptable and sometimes more than that ? especially when getting microscopically close to the innards of the bomb devices, though it lacks the panache Richard Lester brought to the party in 1974?s bomb-on-an-ocean-liner Juggernaut. Aside from a truly awful scene where Bridges discharges his gun in a hot tub in an emotionally-wrenched drunken stupor, Blown Away isn?t difficult to sit through, but it wants to have it both ways in attempting to unearth subtext while still functioning as an adrenaline-pumping thriller, and the resulting mix is far from a potent one. Best assets: Forest Whitaker?s supporting turn as a brazen, machismo-fueled cop and U2?s wonderful songs on the soundtrack.Check out "Juggernaut" instead.
download full length movies
dvd downloads
download a movie
Blown Away legal movie downloads
full length Blown Away mpeg movies
Blown Away video downloads
watch divx movies online
