Good Shepherd, The
Stiff. Wooden. Repressed. Claustrophobic. These are the words that best describe Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) in Robert De Niro’s new film, The Good Shepherd. Wilson’s world is one of secrets. It is a world where every individual is a potential enemy. And it is a world that utterly smothers the “living” out of the life of anyone involved.
Edward Wilson is a quite and introspective young poetry student at Yale. The young poet is drawn into his first secret society, the Skull and Bones club long before he matures as a man. This first exploration into a world of secrets leads him to his next, a World War II precursor to the C.I.A called the O.S.S. Wilson then goes on to be a founding member of the C.I.A.
The Good Shepherd traces the story of Edward Wilson. It follows him as he finds himself in a loveless marriage to the daughter of a senator (Angelina Jolie). It follows him as he tries to outmaneuver his Soviet counterpart codenamed Ulysses (Oleg Steffan). And it follows him as he fails to be an adequate father to his unwanted son (Eddie Redmayne). And lastly, it follows him from secret to secret until it’s no longer clear what is real, who is a friend and who is a liability. It follows him until he is utterly buried beneath the stifling burden of his career.
Director Robert De Niro and screenwriter Eric Roth take us deeply into an uncomfortable world. Other films portray the people in the Central Intelligence Agency as heroes chasing bad guys, shooting silenced guns and blowing things up. This is not at all the world portrayed within The Good Shepherd. Instead we see a world that is completely enshrouded in lies and deceptions. And we see what it costs to be at the heart of such a culture. Such an exploration of the spy world makes for a completely different and refreshing experience than one might expect from such a movie.
This 160 minute film has an incredibly intricate structure. It is possible that the structure of the film – though engaging – is a bit too intricate. Some storylines seem to exist simply to help us learn about Edward Wilson’s character, whereas others which provide for more character development, like his relationship with his wife, seem too brief. The intertwining storylines sometimes become a bit muddled and the viewer feels as if he should have taken notes earlier in the film.
Though The Good Shepherd is a bit hard to follow, it is well worth taking the time to see. For I suspect that this is the reality of covert work and this is the reality for those individuals who choose to serve democracy in secret.
