The Movie:

Essex Boys” is a miniature crime thriller. Although crime has been played more for dark comedy lately (see Guy Ritchie’s terrific “Snatch”), “Essex Boys” goes more back towards the “Reservoir Dogs” territory of more serious, atmospheric crime drama. The film follows a group of criminals in the Essex underground - narrated by Billy Reynolds (Charlie Creed-Miles), the film opens with him being hired to drive Jason Locke (Sean Bean), a criminal who has just been released from prison.

Billy has always been a hanger-on to the criminal group, hired by John Dyke (Tom Wilkinson) to do various jobs. He admires the fast lifestyle that these people lead, but the violence that he keeps seeing around him constantly brings him back down to Earth. Locke is especially brutal, letting loose with a rage against all of those who have wronged him in the past.

Yet, the film remains problematic. For a crime thriller, the film remains too reliant on very basic dialogue - it never really develops the characters that much and certainly, none of them are sympathetic. In other words, the film plays like occasional violence between several conversation-heavy stretches. We don’t care about the characters and as a result, the film drags.

Essex Boys” could have been a better picture - there’s certainly some good actors. But, it simply doesn’t have a screenplay capable of generating any interest in what’s going on.

The DVD

VIDEO: “Essex Boys” is presented by Miramax in a suprisingly good 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer. The studio has done mixed work on smaller titles in the past - and although “Essex Boys” does have some faults to the image, more often than not it looked terrific. Sharpness and detail was very good - there were some dimly lit interior sequences that looked a bit soft, but otherwise, the image looked well-defined. Many scenes boasted a good deal of depth to the image, even.

The faults that I mentioned before are noticable, but minor. A couple of scenes display some very light hints of edge enhancement and traces of pixelation, but neither problem was distracting. Print flaws also popped up occasionally, but these little marks and scratches were infrequent in appearance and tiny.

Colors looked excellent. The film has quite a few scenes in clubs with a lot of neon, and the colors looked sharp and well-saturated. Flesh tones also came across looking natural and accurate and overall, although there were a few bumps, this was a pretty nice transfer.

SOUND: “Essex Boys” is presented Dolby Digital 5.1 and sounds quite good, although not anything exceptional. Much of the film has the sound focused in the front speakers, as dialogue and in-scene music is the element that dominated many scenes. Surround use is fairly involving as the score often fills the room. The surrounds also offer the occasional ambient sound and sound effects. Some people may have a bit of a problem understanding the accents, but dialogue is generally clear.

MENUS:: Simple, film-themed images serve as backgrounds.

EXTRAS: Nothing.

Final Thoughts: “
Essex Boys” has a cast of fine actors, but remains a dull thriller. For $32.99, the DVD is also too expensive seeing that there are no extras. Not recommended.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me *** (out of 5)   (1999)

Cast: Mike Myers, Heather Graham, Michael York, Robert Wagner, Rob Lowe, Seth Green

Directed By Jay Roach

Funnier and more cohesive than the first outing, AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY, it also suffers from the same weaknesses. Lots of bathroom humor, penis and breast jokes, and playing around with popular culture, some of it very funny and some of it woefully misguided. Myers and Roach seem to enjoy the Benny Hill-style sight gags more than they do the plot since they wait until the film is almost halfway over before introducing one. But does anyone watch AUSTIN POWERS for the plot? I think not.

Here’s the plot anyway: Austin goes on his honeymoon only to discover his newlywed wife is really a fembot created by his arch nemesis, Dr. Evil. Soon after, Dr. Evil returns after being thought banished forever in space, and has a master plan to exact revenge on Powers by traveling back 30 years in a time machine and stealing Austin’s "mojo". Austin is also sent back, teaming up with another agent Felicity Shagwell, in order to stop Dr. Evil’s plan for world domination using a laser cannon on the moon to wreak massive destruction.

Laughter is the key to the success or failure of the film, and SHAGGED certainly delivers a number of genuine belly laughs. It also delivers some prolonged "dry periods" where jokes fizzle repeatedly, and sometimes unfunny sections of the film drag on mercilessly for minutes. This "kitchen sink" approach to films seems contradictory. It’s as if they said to themselves, "Everyone has a different sense of humor so let’s try every style and try to make everyone laugh." This works to a certain extent, but it also backfires in that there will be many jokes that a typical viewer will not find funny causing a certain unevenness.

When all is said and done, how much you like this sequel will depend on how much you liked the first film. If you loved the first film, you may have a hard time enjoying the second film as much since the focus has shifted from Austin to Dr. Evil and his henchmen, as if Myers had exhausted all his material for Austin. If you thought the first film was mediocre due to poor plotting and a half-baked script, you’ll most likely enjoy this second installment since the overall schemes are fuller and more fleshed out. Of course if you abhor the first film, by all means stay away from this one, as the jokes are cruder, the characters more obnoxious and the level of humor sinks to lows the first film only hinted at.

Rookie, The

Eastwood may be a well respected director these days, crafting such Academy Award winners as Unforgiven, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby, but he has made a few duds in his time as well.  Anyone remember FirefoxTrue CrimeAbsolute Power?  Blood Work?  If you do, don’t you kinda wish you didn’t?

The Rookie was Eastwood’s attempt to direct a buddy cop flick, very much in the vein of 48 Hrs. and Lethal Weapon.  He didn’t succeed.  The primary reason stems from the fact that those movies had good chemistry, clever dialogue, and a real sense of irreverence that made the banter between the characters infectious.  The Rookie simulates the feel of banter without actually having the depth of characterizations to make us feel we truly know these guys as anything but one-dimensional archetypes.  It also doesn’t help that the script by Boaz Yakin (The Punisher) and Scott Spiegel (Evil Dead II)  is mounted on an insipid plot.

This plot concerns an underground organization of car thieves, led by a German named Strom (Julia, Presumed Innocent), who steal the best of cars, dismantle them in the local chop shops, and then sell them to the highest bidders.  Eastwood plays Nick Pulovski, a down-and-out cop on the grand theft auto beat, that just lost his partner in a bust of Strom’s latest catch.  Pulovski is pulled off the case now that it belongs to homicide, but he is still hell-bent in his determination to take Strom down.  Nick is assigned a hotshot rookie detective, an impeccably gifted but very green new guy named David Ackerman (Sheen, Major League), who knows his stuff, but has had a lifelong bout of freezing up when situations become tense.

The Rookie is a truly poor movie, made almost acceptable because of Eastwood’s dry humor and a few memorable scenes.  It is gratuitously violent and highly sensationalized, although perfectly in keeping with the kinds of action movies churned out by Hollywood during these years.  It does feature an interesting array of actors, although some of them are not really cast well.  Most notable in this regard is Raul Julia, who does make for an intelligent and charismatic adversary, but his underwritten role suffers greatly by the fact that his Latino-flavored accent is too strong to buy him as a German, no matter how many "zese", "zose", and "zem"s he utters liberally.  Sonia Braga (Angel Eyes, Empire) doesn’t even bother trying.

Luckily for us in the audience, Eastwood realizes just how ridiculous the premise of the film is, so he decides to have fun with the project, sending it wildly over the top during certain moments for some tongue-in-cheek laughs.  Perhaps he should have just made the entire thing a complete lark and stripped out all pretense of seriousness, and we might be looking at a better film here.

The one complaint about Eastwood as a director that has managed to stick with him throughout his career is his lack of ability to squeeze out the excess in his films down to a traditional running length, and at over two hours, The Rookie is a good twenty minutes longer than it really needed to be.  Most scenes go on longer than necessary, and some exist for no real reason at all, to the detriment of the overall momentum,

For all of its flaws and excesses, The Rookie might still provide a decent evening’s worth of entertainment for Eastwood’s fans (like myself) and those that love bloody, comical cop action films of any variety.  Some guilty pleasure entertainment may certainly be had, provided you take it about as serious as Eastwood intended, which is to say, not at all.

Big Bounce, The

One of the many reasons that people enjoy reading Elmore Leonard is for the observations made by the colorful characters, and the asides they make are just as enjoyable as the overall story itself.  Films based on Leonard’s books have transferred well in recent years — Out of Sight, Get Shorty, Jackie Brown — made by directors who understand that proper use of dialogue will draw the attention of audiences into the characters, and once those characters see action, we know them well enough to be interested in anything they do or say after that point.

The Big Bounce is the second time the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name has been made, the first in 1969, starring Ryan O’Neal.  That film was a critical failure and this 2004 version doesn’t fare too well either, despite having a very talented cast and nice locale work to bolster it.  The central problem?  Too much filler, not enough substance.  While the more successful Leonard adaptations have had their moments of interesting dialogue, they were always done while ensconced in a forward moving plot.  The Big Bounce, as adapted by Sebastian Gutierrez (Gothika), has almost no story to it at all, finally getting around to some plot developments in the last third.  By that time, it’s too little too late.

Owen Wilson (Shanghai Noon, Zoolander) plays Jack Ryan, a beach bum who ekes out a living in Hawaii performing small-time jobs like B&E’s (breaking and entering) and getting in and out of trouble with the law.  A local district judge (Freeman, Shawshank Redemption) sees Jack needs a break, offering him a place to stay and some cash to be the handyman for some bungalows he owns.  In the meantime, Ryan gets romantically involved with Nancy (Sara Foster, in her debut), the current trophy girlfriend of Ray Ritchie (Sinise, Of Mice and Men) a dangerous high roller in the area, who has a scheme of her own to snatch $200,000 from her verbally abusive man.

The Big Bounce starts off well, establishing its characters and sense of style early, with Wilson delivering his usual off-the-wall quips aplenty.  It doesn’t take long for us to meet all of the main players, most of them within the first fifteen minutes.  The problem is that once we know who these people are and their respective situations, the film treads water for over an hour, showing us the same people doing the same things over and over.  The plot never moves forward, and in fact, is barely even dealt with, shelved in order to try to gain some meager chuckles with Wilson playing Romeo with Foster, in addition to having some hackneyed confrontations with some of the other would-be suitors.

So, we have a good cast, punchy direction by George Armitage (Grosse Pointe Blank), and the usual funky music punctuating the segue scenes, all typical for a Leonard adapted flick.  With all of the positive attributes, it’s a shame there wasn’t anywhere they could go with the material.  The Big Bounce is a nice looking nothing of a movie, so lackadaisical, you’ll probably zone out before the halfway point is reached.  Not to worry, though.  Since nothing’s going on for most of it, you could probably nap for an hour and still have enough information to know what’s going on during the final scenes, if you even care.  The Big Bounce lives up to its name by falling back to earth every time it looked like it was going to take off.

Dalton (Patrick Swayze) is a scholar with a Ph.D in philosophy, but
rather than use his teachings in a University, he’s a “cooler”- a bouncer
who can coolly break up fights in the rowdiest of bars. A gun for hire, he is
called upon by Frank Tillman (Kevin Tighe) to work for him addressing the seemly constant brutal turmoil at the
Double Deuce, a honky tonk dive of an establishment “where they sweep the eyeballs off the floor at closing time” that Tillman owns in Jasper, Missouri. Dalton
comes in and immediately establishes his own methods with the other hired
help in turning the situation around, firing those who either don’t have the
proper temperament for the trade or the ones who are part of the problem
rather than the solution. In a fight at the bar Dalton takes a knife wound and is tended to by
Doc Clay (Kelly Lynch), a strikingly gorgeous, learned and peaceful woman who is
immediately attracted to this paradox of a man. She just happens to be a
former girlfriend of the baddest influence on the Jasper scene, Brad Wesley
(Ben Gazzara) who owns half the town and is strong-arming those who
own the businesses he doesn’t. Wesley sees early on that Dalton’s heroic
doings at the Double Deuce could be a threat to his little empire, so he
goes about the task of getting rid of him by any means that become
necessary. Along the way Dalton’s own bouncer guru Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott)
comes to town to double team the troubles that Dalton is finding are worse
than he had imagined, and seemingly more than he can handle alone. What ensues is- what else?- a life or death struggle between the good guys
and the bad guys with the little town of Jasper at stake.

Hey, I’m not going to lie about it. I often like “bad” movies and sometimes,
I even love ‘em. This is one of those cases. Road House is a movie that has been in seemingly constant rotation on the cable
channels for years- probably making more than a few fans tire of seeing it-
with more than a few choice words and scenes pared away in order to make it
a bit less rowdy for general viewing. Its mindless, constantly over the top fun with a solid
recognizable cast, lots of punches being thrown, adequate T&A (in its uncut
form anyway) and stuff getting blown up.

The parallels of Road House to a Western are obvious through and through;
the entire town of Jasper is being run by a corrupt badman and as a result
his henchmen are terrorizing the townsfolk, prompting one of the business
owners to call in “the best” hired gun available. No sooner than Dalton
arrives, he gets to the job of cleaning up the worst rathole bar one could
find and in the process steps on the toes of the badman who rules Jasper by
firing Wesley’s nephew. Upon finding out that Dalton isn’t so easily
squashed, he escalates the manner to doing so, time and again coming up
short but definitely putting our hired gun ’sheriff’ to the test in the
process. It isn’t long before Dalton’s own hero Wade (Sam Elliott- a
consummate cowboy figure of the last few decades with the film credentials
to prove it) comes along to stand by the side of his protege’, the duo
unleashing all hell on the henchmen Wesley throws at them. Oh, these hired
guns aren’t good guys through and through; they certainly have a profound
liking to violence in spite of any zen misgivings Dalton might claim, and
when the going gets really rough Wade is ready to let Wesley have the little
town to corrupt all he wants, chivalry be damned. In any case, Dalton is
forced to choose between saving his mentor or his girl and comes up short in
his effort to ensure they both survive, setting up a through and through
Western showdown with Dalton riding alone into the villains’ hideout for one
whale of a shootout. In the end the good townsfolk themselves come to the aid
of their ’sheriff’, standing up to the badman who has been extorting and
pillaging their little town for far too long. For a movie with no horses
there sure are alot of cowboys on the screen.

Swayze is an interesting actor; an incredibly athletic, graceful man who
excelled in dance, gymnastics and was even awarded a college football
scholarship, he ultimately turned to an acting career as a result of
recurring knee problems. His choices of movies are known to be erratic; he
gained heartthrob status in Dirty Dancing, yet seemed to choose films that
run the gamut from action-adventure to comedy to more artistic drama.
Watching him in a film such as Road House or Steel Dawn you get the
impression that his dedication to zen physical and mental training is
genuine, much in the way Wesley Snipes has came across in his acting career.
While a bit on the small side, I’ve always thought he was very plausible in
the action film genre with his quiet, stoic manner and his lithe, graceful
physique. He’s definitely the right man to play Dalton.

Video-

Many who read this review will be chiefly concerned with what differences there are between the barebones disc that has been on the market for a few years and this one. Whereas the aspect ratio for the old edition is listed as being 16×9 widescreen, the deluxe edition here is 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, remastered in high definition. How do they compare? Frankly, I’ve never had a problem with the barebones offering and have watched it a number of times since it’s release. In any case, the new disc looks very good; the print is extremely clean with deep, rich colors and very solid blacks. As this new edition is hi-def remastered one would expect it to be sharper and it does seem to be; while not razor sharp, this is as good as I’ve seen the movie look after years of viewing it on cable, on tape and its previous DVD release.

Audio-

Again, I can’t discern alot of difference in comparison to the old edition. The sound here is good; I would have appreciated a remastered 5.1 offering of some sort, but the stereo track is solid with sufficient depth and clarity.

Extras-

If you’re looking for deleted footage in the form of extras or added footage making this a new cut of the movie, don’t- because there isn’t any. What you get here is the theatrical cut, and the same film that comprised the barebones edition.

Audio Commentary with director Rowdy Herrington- Herrington’s commentary track is highly informative, if a little subdued; he walks the viewer through the shooting of the film, commenting on all the actors at some point as well as how he saw the script as a modern day Western, and the lengths he went to in order to get the look he wanted. Its worth checking out if you’re a longtime fan of the movie.

Audio Commentary with Road House fans Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier- Smith and Mosier have alot of fun with this, an admitted cult favorite of the two. Expect a loose, fun, tongue consistently in cheek commentary with the boys, who also show themselves to be extremely knowledgeable on both the cast as well as the production itself. MST3K fans should have no trouble appreciating the offerings here with Smith and Mosier- its a hoot.

On The Road House- Clocking in at 17 minutes this is a recently filmed, retrospective featurette with Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch, Director Rowdy Herrington, Jeff Healy, Marshall Teague (uber-bad guy Jimmy in the film), and martial arts choreographer Benny “The Jet” Urquidez discussing the ongoing appeal of Road House to the masses; its similarity to a Western film, the very comic book-like appearance of the movie with vibrant colors, almost superhuman good guys and bad guys, beautiful women and over the top action sequences; the filming, the bonds made making the movie, the surprise all the stars seem to have at how enduring the popularity of the movie has been to date. A fun piece to see, if only to get a look at the actors in present day.

What Would Dalton Do?- Coming in at 12 minutes, a series of conversations with real life coolers and bouncers and how they handle real crowds and dangerous situations in their profession. I’d rather see more behind the scenes stuff on the movie.

Trivia Track- An endless deluge of tidbits about seemingly anything and nothing, mostly not involving the movie itself, shown onscreen as one watches the film. I felt like I was at a sports bar watching the screen with one of those trivia game pads in my hand. Thanks, but I’ll be leaving this option in the off position.

Sneak Peek at Road House 2

Final Thoughts-

Let’s face it; the main reason this new Deluxe Edition likely exists is to ride piggyback on the new direct-to-video sequel, Road House 2 which was released the same day. Happily, rather than simply slap a new cover on the old disc there have been some tweaks made as well as an assortment of bells and whistles installed.
Just how much you enjoy the film is going to dictate whether you feel this is deserving of a double dip. If you love the movie then by all means I say pick it up for the commentaries and the featurette present here. As far as how the film looks and sounds in comparison to the barebones disc, there isn’t a whole lot of difference to this viewer’ eyes and ears, but that is a compliment to the old edition as I’ve always felt it looked and sounded fine. If you’re a casual fan and already have the barebones edition, don’t waste your time. If Road House is one of your longtime favorites, the new deluxe edition isn’t a huge improvement over the old version, but still recommended.

Slick and stylish in its writing, direction and design, the psychological thriller “Hard Candy” stays fresh for as long as it does on the strength of powerful performances by Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. Maddeningly exploitative, the film takes a provocative subject — pedophilia — and wraps it in a sterile, vacuum-sealed package, devoid of meaning. Page plays Hayley, a precocious 14-year-old with a Jean Seberg fixation, who hooks up via the Internet with Jeff (Wilson), a successful 32-year-old photographer whose taste in women (make that girls) veers toward the distressingly young. The first 20 minutes of the film (which would have made a great short) detail their innuendo-tinged pas de deux as they agree to meet at a coffeehouse before naughtily retreating to Jeff’s minimalist Hollywood Hills home for an impromptu photo shoot. ADVERTISEMENT Hayley ratchets up the tension with increasingly daring intimations, then quickly turns the tables on Jeff. As predator becomes prey, the film goes terribly wrong, devolving into a disappointingly simple-minded revenge fantasy bent on dispensing the kind of medieval justice once meted out by Steve Martin as Theodoric of York on “Saturday Night Live.” The sophisticated, complex characters initially set up by screenwriter Brian Nelson and director David Slade grow tiresome as they are put through a series of reversals designed to test the audience’s sympathies. The essentially two-handed drama feels increasingly like a one-act play stretched beyond its limits. The boyish Page is amazingly assured, but the implausible turns of the script weigh heavily as Hayley morphs into a pixie-faced, scalpel-wielding vigilante, and the punishment she has planned for Jeff drags the film into a neighborhood adjacent to, albeit less explicit, than that inhabited by films such as “Hostel” and “Saw” (also Lionsgate releases). Though Jeff is clearly a creep from the get-go — he is meeting underage girls on the Web — Wilson adeptly shades him so that it’s open to question how sleazy he actually is. The filmmakers, however, sabotage their own (rather weak) climax by stacking the deck in the film’s second half, seemingly to rationalize “Hard Candy’s” own sleaziness. As a pure thriller, the film also goes soft in the last half hour. All the film’s shiny surfaces and lacerating dialogue cannot make up for the fact that the machinations geared toward keeping the characters in or near the gnawingly claustrophobic house also serve to drain it of any real tension. Hard Candy MPAA rating: R for disturbing, violent and aberrant sexual content involving a teen, and for language A Lionsgate Films release. Director David Slade. Producers David W. Higgins, Richard Hutton, Michael Caldwell. Screenplay by Brian Nelson. Director of photography Jo Willems. Editor Art Jones. Running time: 1 hour, 39 minutes. It used to be exciting to see a new 3D animated feature, but after some dull outings of late with Shark Tale, Robots, and now, Madagascar, the eye-candy thrill is gone and we need something more to keep our interest.  Unfortunately, if there is any interest in Madagascar, it will probably come mostly from very young viewers, as the comedy and events that transpire are lively and colorful enough for toddlers and those just entering grade school, but there’s little in substance for most everyone else.  Madagascar starts off in setting in New York’s Central Park Zoo, where the main attractions are Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller, Meet the Fockers), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock, Head of State), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer, Six Days Seven Nights), Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith, Collateral), a couple of chimps, and a crew of rascally penguins.  Tired of his urban existence, Marty yearns to see more of the outside world, and makes his escape, along with his friends out to stop him before its too late.  The breakout goes awry, as the animals are deemed to be shipped back to Africa, where they are slated to spend their days at a wildlife reserves.  However, another mishap occurs, stranding the animals on the island of Madagascar, where they find they must fend for themselves in an eat-or-be-eaten existence they aren’t altogether prepared for. Unlike many of the 3D animated features that have come out before it, Madagascar isn’t revolutionary, or even evolutionary.  It is a complete formula picture, full of cartoon characters, lots of moments for throwing in crowd pleasing songs to sing along to, fart gags, and in between, a few inside jokes, asides, and pop culture references to try to appeal to adults in the audience.  There really isn’t enough humor here to keep most adults from nodding off, and kids will probably not understand any of the jokes aimed at older generations, so the kitchen sink approach suffers from too much of one and not enough of the other.  While films like Shrek and the Finding Nemo managed to have the right balance to keep everyone amused, Madagascar seems to be spread very thin in its material.  The characters are very similar to those we’ve seen before in similar animated movies, and for some reason, most of the characters in Madagascar annoy more than they amuse. I could just label Madagascar as a stunningly made kids film and give it a pass, but it’s clear the makers of it are going for mass appeal.  In that regard, the results are less than favorable, so if you’re looking for another film to appeal to all ages, you will probably find yourself growing anxious for the film to finally end, even though the youngest in your family will want to see it again (and again and again).  Despite the kind of money Dreamworks pumps into the artistic and computer graphic element, it’s the story telling that is the key to a lasting film, and without much of a story, there also isn’t much of a movie.

Undiscovered
This is a taut political thriller that rivals Dune for impact, if not for
complexity. The issues explored here are both timely and universal. Somehow,
this mixes the Star Trek mythos with commentary on the Cold War, race
relations and military down-sizing. It is indescribable how cool this movie
is.

The Movie

Every few years, a movie comes along that is a true phenomenon. These movies permeate not only the filmgoing public, but our entire culture as well. Almost by definition, a phenomenon is something that is unique and cannot be duplicated. But, the powers that be in Hollywood don’t like the word “no” and will try to re-capture lightning in a bottle over and over again. When The Exorcist first hit movie screens in 1973, it became one of these phenomenon films and the legend of the film quickly grew. And even after two financially disappointing sequels, Hollywood is still trying to capitalize on the fame of that influential movie some 30 years later with the release of Exorcist: The Beginning, a film whose behind-the-scenes story is much more interesting than the movie itself.

Exorcist: The Beginning is a prequel to The Exorcist and tells the backstory of Father Merrin, the exorcist from the original film, who was played by Max Von Sydow in the 1973 movie. As Exorcist: The Beginning opens in 1949, where we meet Merrin (here played by Stellan Skarsgard) in Cairo. Merrin had been a priest, but due to some violent experiences in his past, he’s since left the church. Merrin is approached Semelier (Ben Cross), a mysterious man who asks Merrin, who has a background in archeology, to venture to Africa to retrieve an artifact from a dig. Once in Africa, Merrin meets Father Francis (James D’Arcy), a representative from The Vatican, and Sarah (Izabella Scorupco). The archeological team has uncovered an ancient church buried underground which dates back to a time before Christianity reached that part of the world.

As Merrin begins to investigate the area, he learns that the locals are afraid of the dig site, and that there have been some mysterious occurrences in the region around the church. The evidence begins to point towards something supernatural happening around the excavation and Merrin realizes that he must recover his lost faith and prepare to battle the ultimate evil.

While perusing the chat forums on this very website, I often see posters debating about “bad” movies. For me, there are two kinds of “bad” movies. First, there are low-budget movies that never really stand a chance because of bad acting, bad story, bad lighting, etc. Then, there are those big-budget Hollywood films which have the luxury of offering name actors, nice sets, lush cinematographer, but still fail to be entertaining or satisfying. Exorcist: The Beginning falls into this second category, as this movie, with its rumored budget of $50 million is a true stinker.

It’s truly appropriate that a movie concerning the ultimate evil would commit what I consider to be the ultimate cinematic sin; Exorcist: The Beginning is boring. For the bulk of the film, nothing happens, save for Stellan Skarsgard wandering around African sets looking both concerned and confused. The story fro Exorcist: The Beginning was written by popular novelist Caleb Carr and James Cameron collaborator William Wisher, but the final screenplay was penned by Alexi Hawley, who has cobbled together a jumbled series of scenes in which little happens. When something does take place, the audience is typically in the dark as to what it has to do with the overriding story. During the final act, just before all hell breaks loose (literally), the film becomes a sort of whodunit?, as we (the viewers) are supposed to wonder which character is possessed by the evil. To be honest, up until that point, I hadn’t realized that the question was going to come up. One of the oddest things about Exorcist: The Beginning is that it really makes no connection to The Exorcist. If the viewer didn’t realize that Merrin is the character from The Exorcist, and let’s face it, most filmgoers don’t memorize character’s names, then they wouldn’t have a clue as to how this pitiful film relates to the horror classic.

While Exorcist: The Beginning purports to tell the origin of Father Merrin, the origin of the film itself is much more interesting. When the project was first announced, legendary director John Frankenheimer was attached to direct, but stepped down due to health issues. Then, Paul Schrader took the reins and shot the film. However, studio executives reportedly didn’t like his version and fired him, hiring Renny Harlin to re-shoot much of the film. As is his reputation, Harlin gives the movie a nice look and the finale is well-done, but he can’t overcome the ludicrously dull script and gives the movie no sense of suspense at all. Rumors abound on the internet that we will one day see Schrader’s version so what we may compare the two movies. I truly hope that this is the case, as I can’t imagine Schrader’s film being any worse.

Video

Exorcist: The Beginning possesses DVD courtesy of Warner Home Video. The film is coming to DVD in two separate releases, one full-frame and the other widescreen. For the purposes of this review, only the widescreen version was viewed. The film has been letterboxed at 2.35:1 and the transfer is enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs. The image is quite sharp and clear, and looks very good, as there is only a slight amount of grain visible on the picture. The colors are all very natural-looking and the daytime scenes are never overly bright and the nighttime scenes are never too dark. There are some trace haloes around the characters when they move, but they aren’t distracting, and there is no overt artifacting on the image. Overall, a nice video transfer.

Audio

If you think that the movie Exorcist: The Beginning is a let-down, wait until you hear the great audio which accompanies this bad movie. The DVD contains both a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track and a DTS 5.1 track. Both of these tracks sound great, as they provide clear and audible dialogue with no audible hiss. The movie has a very nice sound design and these tracks make great use of the surround channels and subwoofer. During the few action scenes, the sound surrounds the viewer and does add a little something to the movie. The edge here goes to the DTS track, as it is crisper and provides a deeper bass sound, but both are very good.

Extras

The Exorcist: The Beginning DVD contains only a handful of extras. We start with an audio commentary from director Renny Harlin. This is an odd track, as Harlin is very open about the short amount of time that he had to complete the film (10 months) and points out flaws such as the crappy CGI in the movie. Yet, he never mentions the fact that he was brought in to fix Schrader’s film. I can only assume that he was told not to. Harlin also turns up in “Behind the Scenes”, an 8-minute featurette which contains on-the-set footage and comments from the film’s actors. The extras are rounded out by “Cast & Crew” bios and the “Theatrical Trailer” for Exorcist: The Beginning, which has been letterboxed at 1.85:1.

It could be argued that Exorcist: The Beginning isn’t necessarily a “bad” film, but a disappointing one. But, that would be splitting hairs, as the film is simply boring and not entertaining. Stellan Skarsgard does an admirable job in the film and director Renny Harlin certainly knows where to point the camera, but they can’t save a film which was damned from the beginning.

Manchurian Candidate, The
This movie was a mess.I love that the commercials say: “You won’t be able to breathe in the last 30 minutes!” or something like that, and yeah, they were right, I spent all that time trying to understand what the fu*k was going on.I’m really disappointed with the movie, and the only good thing about it was Liev Schreiber who I hope gets more and more big roles. The rest of the cast (Denzel and Meryll) was good as always, with Jon Voight being totally wasted.I haven’t seen the original so I can’t compare but after this one, I’m in no hurry to see it.
